Greg Patton 8.75" Palmetto Tree Utensil/Spoon Jar DP6071

Greg's work is inspired by the decorated stoneware and face jugs of 19th-century Edgefield, SC pottery. He works with traditional elements of this style, including ash glazes and slip decoration. Greg also draws ideas from the tradition of pottery throughout the Southeast, incorporating and reinterpreting old themes to create a mixed body of work.

This stoneware jar features the iconic palmetto tree, a symbol closely associated with South Carolina and the historic Edgefield pottery tradition. Handbuilt and finished in an earth-toned alkaline-style glaze, each jar is decorated using slip trailing, a technique that creates raised, tactile linework forming the tree motif. This jar introduces a snake coiled around the trunk, adding a layer of narrative and visual tension while echoing themes often found in Southern folk and outsider traditions. The form itself—an open, slightly tapered vessel with applied side lugs—aligns with traditional spoon jars or utensil holders, historically used in kitchens but now widely collected as decorative objects. Patton’s interpretation bridges functional pottery, regional identity, and contemporary folk expression, making these pieces compelling for collectors of Edgefield-influenced ceramics and Southern stoneware.
