Greg Patton 2" Edgefield Inspired Mini Face Jug DP6053

Greg's work is inspired by the decorated stoneware and face jugs of 19th-century Edgefield, SC pottery. He works with traditional elements of this style, including ash glazes and slip decoration. Greg also draws ideas from the tradition of pottery throughout the Southeast, incorporating and reinterpreting old themes to create a mixed body of work.

Drawing influence from the historic Edgefield District pottery tradition, these small-scale works retain the defining characteristics of their larger counterparts—bulging eyes, sculpted features, and animated expressions—while embracing the spontaneity that comes with working at a reduced scale. Each jug is individually formed and finished in a range of earth-toned and alkaline-style glazes, from deep browns to lighter, variegated surfaces. Subtle differences in facial structure, glaze movement, and surface texture make every piece distinct, reinforcing their identity as one-of-a-kind studio works. Despite their size, these miniatures carry a strong visual and cultural presence, functioning as both accessible entry points for new collectors and compelling additions to established collections of Southern folk pottery and contemporary face jugs. Together, they form a dynamic grouping that highlights Patton’s ability to translate tradition into small, expressive forms.
