Greg Patton 6" Edgefield Influenced Face Jug DP6028

Greg's work is inspired by the decorated stoneware and face jugs of 19th-century Edgefield, SC pottery. He works with traditional elements of this style, including ash glazes and slip decoration. Greg also draws ideas from the tradition of pottery throughout the Southeast, incorporating and reinterpreting old themes to create a mixed body of work.

This face jug by Greg Patton reflects the strong influence of the historic Edgefield District pottery tradition of South Carolina, where expressive stoneware face vessels became an iconic form in Southern folk ceramics. Patton interprets that lineage through a compact jug form featuring bulging inset eyes, a toothy grin, and exaggerated ears, all modeled directly into the clay body. Finished in a glossy alkaline-style brown glaze, the surface recalls traditional Edgefield utilitarian stoneware while allowing the sculptural features to remain sharply defined. The jug includes a small functional handle and neck opening, reinforcing its connection to the historic vessel forms that inspired the piece.

Patton’s work balances traditional Southern face jug aesthetics with contemporary folk expression, producing a piece that feels both historically grounded and visually playful. Though modest in size, the exaggerated facial features and lively expression give the jug strong presence, making it a compelling addition for collectors of Southern folk pottery, Edgefield-influenced ceramics, and contemporary face jugs.

Measures 6" tall, about 5.5" wide and has a 4" base.
