Greg Patton 4" Edgefield Inspired Face Jug DP6049

Greg's work is inspired by the decorated stoneware and face jugs of 19th-century Edgefield, SC pottery. He works with traditional elements of this style, including ash glazes and slip decoration. Greg also draws ideas from the tradition of pottery throughout the Southeast, incorporating and reinterpreting old themes to create a mixed body of work.

This face jug reflects a compact and expressive interpretation of the historic Edgefield pottery tradition, where sculpted face vessels emerged from Southern utilitarian stoneware practices. Despite its smaller scale, the piece carries strong visual presence through its elongated facial structure, raised eyes, and tightly set, toothy mouth. Finished in a earth-toned alkaline glaze, the surface shows natural movement and texture, with subtle pooling and tonal shifts that emphasize the jug’s sculptural features. The integrated handle and traditional vessel form further connect the work to its Edgefield lineage.

Patton’s approach balances historical influence with contemporary folk sensibility, resulting in a piece that feels both grounded in tradition and distinctly individual. Its size makes it especially versatile for collectors, whether as a standalone object or part of a broader grouping of Southern face jugs and Edgefield-inspired pottery.

Measures 4.5" tall, about 4.5" wide and has a 2.5" base.
