Greg Patton 7" Edgefield Influenced Face Jug DP6047

Greg's work is inspired by the decorated stoneware and face jugs of 19th-century Edgefield, SC pottery. He works with traditional elements of this style, including ash glazes and slip decoration. Greg also draws ideas from the tradition of pottery throughout the Southeast, incorporating and reinterpreting old themes to create a mixed body of work.

This piece draws directly from the historic Edgefield District pottery tradition, where expressive face vessels emerged as both functional forms and culturally symbolic objects. Patton interprets that lineage through a lighter, alkaline-style glaze, giving the piece a softer, almost atmospheric surface while maintaining strong sculptural definition. The jug features wide, protruding eyes, a pronounced nose bridge, and a tightly gridded toothy mouth, all modeled with deliberate exaggeration. The lighter glaze pools and breaks across the surface, emphasizing contours and lending a sense of age and movement reminiscent of traditional Edgefield wares.

Balancing historical reference with contemporary folk expression, this piece stands as a refined yet character-driven example of modern Edgefield-inspired pottery, ideal for collectors focused on Southern ceramic traditions and evolving interpretations of the face jug form.

Measures 7" tall, about 7" wide and has a 4" base.
