Greg Patton 4.5" Face Jug DP6077

Greg's work is inspired by the decorated stoneware and face jugs of 19th-century Edgefield, SC pottery. He works with traditional elements of this style, including ash glazes and slip decoration. Greg also draws ideas from the tradition of pottery throughout the Southeast, incorporating and reinterpreting old themes to create a mixed body of work.

This jug features a rich warm brown alkaline glaze that enhances the sculptural depth of the form. With wide, alert eyes, a slightly parted toothy mouth, and pronounced ears, the jug reflects the expressive qualities rooted in the Edgefield pottery tradition while maintaining Patton’s contemporary folk interpretation. The rounded vessel form and applied handle connect the piece to traditional Southern utilitarian wares, while the lively facial modeling gives it a strong personality. Variations in glaze tone and surface movement add visual interest, emphasizing the handcrafted nature of the work.

A solid example of modern Southern face jug pottery, this piece balances tradition and character, making it appealing to collectors of folk art and Edgefield-inspired ceramics.
