Feliciano Abaurre's work is the result of multiple esthetic and functional influences, from South America to Japan, Africa and the US , British and Indian pottery, always playing with the connection of clay and farm, utilitary ware for fermentation and storage.
This compelling raku-fired face jug highlights the artist’s ability to merge traditional vessel forms with contemporary sculptural expression. Handbuilt in stoneware and finished using the raku firing process, the piece features a contemplative, elongated face with narrow, slit-like eyes and a quiet, introspective presence. The surface is richly varied, with smoky grays, metallic flashes, and deep rust-toned passages created through the raku process. Areas of crackle and carbon trapping give the piece a weathered, almost atmospheric quality, while vertical bands of darker reduction marks emphasize the form’s structure and height. A single handle integrated into the shoulder subtly references classic jug forms while maintaining the work’s sculptural integrity.
Abaurre’s restrained facial expression contrasts with the dynamic, unpredictable surface, creating a balance between calm form and active finish. The result is a piece that feels both ancient and modern—rooted in tradition yet distinctly contemporary.
This piece is 11" tall and about 8" wide and has a 4.25" base.
