This mixed-media figure by Alabama outsider artist Michael Banks is created from reclaimed roofing material or tar paper mounted to a narrow vertical panel and anchored by a salvaged wood base. The elongated figure emerges from a heavily textured surface of layered blacks, ochres, reds, and deep blues, creating a striking balance between abstraction and portraiture.

Banks uses incised lines, weathered textures, and distressed materials to build a figure that feels both ancient and contemporary. The rough surface and evidence of the material's previous life become an important part of the narrative, transforming common construction materials into a compelling work of contemporary folk art.
