Michael Gates 9.25' Dragon DP6291 RESERVED

Michael Gates is a North Carolina potter and a descendant of a German family synonymous with time honored traditions: The Reinhardt Pottery. He is a sixth-generation potter carrying on techniques while adding his own inspired voice.

Playful, expressive, and unmistakably Michael Gates, this dragon captures the artist's gift for transforming clay into imaginative folk art creatures. Standing confidently on four sturdy legs, the dragon stretches its long neck skyward, opening a toothy mouth as if caught mid-roar. The rounded body, curled tail, and exaggerated features create a whimsical personality that balances humor and fantasy.

The surface is finished is accented with hand-applied cream slip decoration, creating a lively pattern of dots and drips that animate the form from every angle. Sculpted scales, raised details, and carefully modeled facial features showcase Gates' attention to texture and storytelling. While inspired by mythical creatures, the sculpture retains the approachable charm and folk sensibility that collectors have come to appreciate in Gates' work.

A standout piece for collectors of Southern folk pottery, contemporary ceramics, and imaginative sculptural art.

This piece is 9.25" tall, 9" long and 3.5" deep.
