Michael Gates is a North Carolina potter and a descendant of a German family synonymous with time honored traditions: The Reinhardt Pottery. He is a sixth-generation potter carrying on techniques while adding his own inspired voice.

Michael Gates brings his signature mix of Southern folk energy and imaginative sculpture to this highly detailed, tower-form ceramic. The surface is alive with hand-applied drips, dots, spikes, and geometric studs creating a tactile, otherworldly skin that begs to be explored from every angle.

A whimsical horned figure crowns the top, complete with small wings and an open, expressive mouth, while playful pig heads emerge around the lower body like guardians of the form. Cutout openings and pierced details add depth and shadow, giving the piece a strong sense of movement and personality. Equal parts creature, vessel, and surreal totem, this work is a standout example of Gates’ collector-favorite style—bold, humorous, and unmistakably handmade.
