Michael Gates 16" Wide Eyed Winged Sculpture DP6150

Michael Gates is a North Carolina potter and a descendant of a German family synonymous with time honored traditions: The Reinhardt Pottery. He is a sixth-generation potter carrying on techniques while adding his own inspired voice.

Standing 16" tall, this sculptural ceramic work showcases the Michael's unmistakable visual language—part folk totem, part surreal figure, and entirely one-of-a-kind. Finished in a soft, pale celadon-toned glaze with subtle pooling in recessed areas, the piece combines highly detailed surface work with a commanding vertical presence. A wide-eyed winged figure emerges at the top, framed by dramatic ears or feathered forms and an expressive face with exposed teeth and flowing sculpted details cascading down the body. The surface is richly ornamented with hand-applied studs, drips, geometric forms, and symbolic embellishments, encouraging the eye to travel across every inch of the work. A small pig motif rests near the center, adding Gates’ signature touch of humor and storytelling. Inscribed “G8S” on the front, the piece reads as both guardian figure and contemporary folk relic.

Striking from every angle, this tall sculptural vessel blurs the line between pottery and sculpture—an exceptional statement work for collectors of Southern folk pottery, outsider art, and contemporary ceramics.

This statement piece is 16" tall, 7.5" wide, and with a 6.25" base..
