Michael Gates 10" "Touch Grass" Face Sculpture DP6443 SOLD

Michael Gates brings a decidedly contemporary message to the Southern face jug tradition with this sculptural ceramic work. The ivory-glazed jug features large openwork eyes surrounded by hand-painted stars and dots, a raised zipper running down the center of the face, and individual sculpted teeth spelling “NATURE.” Below, the handwritten phrase “TOUCH GRASS” adds Gates’ characteristic humor while suggesting a return to the physical, natural world.

The top is crowned with a sculpted flower surrounded by the repeated inscription “Unlearn What You Know,” adding themes of reflection, renewal, and questioning convention. The restrained black-and-ivory palette allows the unusual construction, openwork features, and message-driven details to take center stage. Both playful and thought-provoking, the piece is a distinctive example of Gates’ contemporary approach to traditional folk pottery.
