Greg Patton 6" Edgefield Homage Face Jug DP6048

Greg's work is inspired by the decorated stoneware and face jugs of 19th-century Edgefield, SC pottery. He works with traditional elements of this style, including ash glazes and slip decoration. Greg also draws ideas from the tradition of pottery throughout the Southeast, incorporating and reinterpreting old themes to create a mixed body of work.

This homage closely follows the traditional forms developed in the 19th-century Edgefield District of SC, where face vessels were created within a utilitarian stoneware tradition. The piece features a darker, earth-toned alkaline glaze, echoing historic firing results and surface variation associated with early Southern kilns. The form emphasizes classic facial construction—applied circular eyes, a long, protruding nose, and a slightly asymmetrical mouth—capturing the direct, unrefined character that defines original Edgefield examples. Surface variation, glaze pooling, and minor irregularities reinforce the piece’s connection to historical precedent.

As a homage work, this jug functions as both a nod to traditional craftsmanship and a continuation of the Edgefield visual language, appealing to collectors interested in historically grounded reproductions and Southern pottery lineage.

Measures 6" tall, about 6" wide and has a 3.5" base.
