This distinctive face-jug interpretation by Alabama outsider artist Michael Banks reimagines one of the South's most recognizable folk-art traditions through the artist's unique contemporary lens. Constructed from hand-cut cardboard and mixed media, the work combines painted surfaces, assembled elements, and sculptural relief to create a face that is both confrontational and deeply expressive.

Banks transforms a simple cardboard form into a powerful portrait through layered paint, raised features, and carefully placed found materials. The elongated nose projects outward from the surface, while intense eyes and vivid red lips give the figure an unmistakable presence. Earthy greens, browns, creams, and blacks create a weathered appearance that feels as though the piece has emerged from another time and place.

Inspired by traditional Southern face jugs he encountered in our gallery, Banks developed his own interpretation of the form, replacing clay with reclaimed materials while preserving the emotional intensity and spirit of the originals. Mounted on a dark backing and professionally framed, this work highlights the artist's ability to bridge folk tradition, outsider art, and contemporary assemblage.
