Wayne Hewell is a 5th generation potter who mixes his own glazes and works in a studio along a dirt path leading to a chicken house in Gillsville, GA. The Hewell family has been creating pottery for over 100 years. He uses wild clay from Georgia, fires in a wood-fired kiln, and uses Tobacco Spit or Alkaline glazes to create the greenish, runny surfaces on the jugs. 

This distinctive swirl jug face jug blends two important Southern pottery traditions into a single expressive work. It features the characteristic horizontal slip-trailed bands associated with traditional swirl jugs, while the front is transformed into a dramatic face with arched brows, bulging eyes, a long pointed nose, and a grimacing mouth displaying hand-formed teeth.

Swirl-decorated jugs are part of the pottery heritage of North Georgia and the Catawba Valley region, where potters used contrasting clay slips to create rhythmic bands around utilitarian forms. Hewell builds on that tradition by incorporating a sculptural face, creating a piece that bridges historic pottery techniques and contemporary folk art expression. The jug retains the classic form of a traditional whiskey or syrup jug while becoming a striking work of ceramic sculpture. The result is a highly collectible example of Southern folk pottery that honors tradition while showcasing Hewell's distinctive artistic voice.
