Wayne Hewell is a 5th generation potter who mixes his own glazes and works in a studio along a dirt path leading to a chicken house in Gillsville, GA. The Hewell family has been creating pottery for over 100 years. He uses wild clay from Georgia, fires in a wood-fired kiln, and uses Tobacco Spit or Alkaline glazes to create the greenish, runny surfaces on the jugs.
This handbuilt stoneware face jug sculpture by Wayne Hewell features a vertical stack of expressive faces, forming a striking totem-like ceramic work. Rooted in Southern folk pottery traditions, this stacker combines exaggerated facial features with a layered blue-gray glaze that highlights its sculptural depth and handcrafted character. Viewable from all sides, the piece offers strong visual presence and narrative appeal, making it an excellent addition to a contemporary ceramics or folk art collection. Measures 9.5" tall with a 4.5" base.
