Wayne Hewell 5.5" Green Face Jug w/Handles
Wayne Hewell is a 5th generation potter who mixes his own glazes and works in a studio along a dirt path leading to a chicken house in Gillsville, GA. The Hewell family has been creating pottery for over 100 years. He uses wild clay from Georgia, fires in a wood-fired kiln, and uses Tobacco Spit or Alkaline glazes to create the greenish, runny surfaces on the jugs.
This expressive face jug by Georgia potter Wayne Hewell captures the spirit of Southern folk pottery through humor, personality, and sculptural form. The rounded vessel body rises into a tall neck framed by twin handles, while the exaggerated facial features—arched brows, oversized eyes, pursed lips, and slightly crooked teeth—give the piece a distinctive and unmistakably human presence. Finished in a soft, mossy green glaze with subtle tonal variation, the surface has an organic, almost weathered quality that enhances the jug’s handmade character. The elongated ears and playful asymmetry reflect Hewell’s signature approach to face vessels—deeply rooted in traditional Southern pottery yet infused with contemporary individuality.
Equally charming and expressive, this jug bridges functional pottery form and sculptural storytelling, making it a strong addition for collectors of Southern folk art, Georgia pottery, and contemporary face jugs.
