Marvin Bailey 10" Crying Eyes Face Jug DP6417

This expressive face jug by South Carolina folk potter Marvin Bailey features a broad, rounded form and deeply modeled facial features highlighted by dramatic white glaze runs streaming from the eyes. The effect gives the face its distinctive “crying eyes” appearance, with the white glaze continuing down the cheeks and along the sides of the vessel.

Heavy brows, a prominent nose, applied ears, individually formed teeth, and an exaggerated grimace give the jug a strong sculptural presence. A warm, richly textured brown glaze covers the body, pooling and breaking across the hand-worked surface, while the traditional spout and applied handle retain the recognizable Southern jug form.

Bailey has explored face jugs for decades; his work was included in a Southern face jug exhibition as early as 2004, and examples of his pottery are documented in major Southern pottery auctions and collections. This crying eyes jug is a particularly expressive example of his contemporary interpretation of the Southern face jug tradition.
