Heather Elyse Head says, "My favorite thing about my art is that it often makes people smile when they see it. I love to use bold colors and whimsical, exaggerated features on my face jugs and other pottery pieces.”
This jug by Gillsville-area potter Heather Elyse Head carries forward the Southern folk pottery tradition with a distinctly contemporary hand. The form is compact and balanced, with a pulled handle and short collar that anchor the piece firmly in the utilitarian jug lineage. What immediately commands attention are the exaggerated, applied eyes—wide, alert, and slightly off-kilter—giving the piece a charged, almost watchful presence. The sculpted nose and sharply defined lips add to the expressive tension, while the ears and surface details reinforce the hand-built, intuitive quality of the work.
The glaze is a layered, weathered green with mottled earth tones breaking through, creating a patina that feels aged and organic. Subtle runs and variations across the surface enhance the sense of movement and depth, echoing the unpredictable nature of traditional kiln work. Rooted in the face jug tradition yet clearly individual in execution, this piece sits comfortably between historical reference and contemporary interpretation—an engaging example of North Georgia folk pottery with strong visual personality.
