Breezy 8" Poe and Raven Jug DP6118

This figural face jug by Dale "Breezy" Ellis draws inspiration from the brooding presence of Edgar Allan Poe, rendered with a quiet intensity that gives the piece its psychological weight. The sculpted face—pale, elongated, and deeply set with watchful eyes—emerges from a natural clay ground, framed by dark, incised hair and a restrained mustache that anchors the likeness in 19th-century portraiture.

Turning the vessel reveals a raised raven in glossy black relief, a direct nod to Poe’s enduring literary symbol. The contrast between the matte, earth-toned body and the darker, more reflective surface of the bird adds depth and narrative tension. Ellis uses the jug form as both canvas and structure, allowing the imagery to wrap seamlessly around the piece.

Rooted in Southern folk pottery traditions yet distinctly narrative-driven, this work bridges literature and ceramic form. It reads as both object and homage—ideal for collectors drawn to figural pottery with strong thematic identity and cross-disciplinary reference.

This jug is 8" tall, with a 5.25" diameter base.
