These expressive face jugs represent a collaboration between Billy Joe Craven and his daughter, Marcia Craven, ninth- and tenth-generation potters carrying forward their family's long-standing Gillsville, Georgia pottery tradition. Billy Joe turned the traditional jug form, creating rounded body, applied handle, and a jaunty angled spout before transforming each vessel with a distinctly individual face. Exaggerated nose, prominent ears, expressive eyes, sculpted mouths, and applied teeth gives the jug the spirited personality associated with Southern face-jug pottery.

Marcia created the custom glazes, adding another generation's artistic voice to the work. Layered greens, and muted plum and purple tones move across the surfaces, pooling and overlapping to produce variations that make each jug visually unique.

More than simply collaborative work, this jug brings two generations of Craven potters together in a single piece—Billy Joe's traditional turning and sculptural work paired with Marcia's contemporary approach to glaze. They offer collectors a tangible connection to a remarkable family pottery tradition that has continued through ten generations.
