Billy Joe Craven 9" Elder Face Jug DP6065
From one of the oldest potting families in the South, Billy Joe is a descendant of Peter Craven, who set up a pottery business in North Carolina as early as 1760. Billy Joe learned to turn from members of the Hewell family and is now a leading producer of unglazed gardenware in the region. While Craven Pottery continues to produce outdoor decorative and functional pottery, Billy Joe finds time to continue the tradition of creating face jugs in his own unmistakable style.
A contemplative and more restrained face jug by Billy Joe, defined by its elongated features, downward gaze, and heavily textured blue glaze. The surface is marked with small crater-like accents that give the piece a weathered, almost timeworn quality. Unlike his exaggerated forms, this jug leans into subtle expression—capturing a quiet, introspective presence. It reflects the evolution of the Southern face jug tradition into more nuanced, emotionally driven interpretations while maintaining its functional vessel roots.
This piece is 9" tall, about 6" wide, and has a 4" base.
Ships for $20. Because of the high shipping cost, pottery does not ship outside the continental USA.
