Billy Joe Craven 10.5" Eagle DP6400

This striking eagle figural jug by Gillsville, GA potter Billy Joe Craven transforms the traditional handled jug into a bold piece of Southern folk pottery. The eagle emerges dramatically from the vessel with a long hooked beak, prominent eye, deeply incised feathering, sculpted wings, and oversized taloned feet resting against the base.

A rich blue glaze with areas of green, black, and earthy variation flows across the surface, collecting in the carved details and emphasizing the bird's feathers and sculptural form. Craven's exaggerated interpretation gives the eagle a distinctive folk-art character while the neck, rounded body, and applied handle preserve the recognizable form of a traditional jug. An unusual and highly decorative example of contemporary Georgia folk pottery.

This piece is 10.5" tall, about 8" wide and 10" deep..
