Love & Happiness Hand Grenade is a hand-built ceramic sculpture that blends playful imagery with charged symbolism. A smiling emoji-style head sits atop a small standing figure, while a sculpted grenade element rests above, creating tension between innocence and volatility. Raised lettering around the base references “Love,” “Happiness,” and “Hand Grenade,” reinforcing the layered message.

Kiln-fired and finished in bright, high-contrast glazes, the piece combines cartoon-like optimism with unmistakable edge. The exaggerated forms and bold color palette give it immediate visual impact.

As with much of Hetherington’s work, the sculpture uses humor to address emotional extremes and cultural contradictions. It plays with the idea that even joy and positivity can carry weight—or consequences—when handled carelessly.
