The Baby Blue is a hand-built ceramic sculpture featuring a blue childlike figure holding an oversized green grenade. On the back, a raised red arrow points upward with the words “THE SOFT SPOT,” directing attention to the top of the figure’s head.

Kiln-fired and finished in glossy glaze, the exaggerated proportions and simplified features create a contrast between innocence and danger. The familiar toy-like figure paired with a weapon form introduces tension, blending humor with darker undertones.

As with much of Hetherington’s work, the piece uses direct imagery and text to explore vulnerability, conditioning, and human fragility. The bold color and clear symbolism make it visually immediate, while the layered meaning invites closer reflection.
