My Brain Cells 1969–1981 is a vividly glazed ceramic sculpture combining figurative portraiture with symbolic bottle form. A sculpted head anchors the base, while a tall, patterned neck rises upward, crowned by a winged figure. The front inscription reads “My Brain Cells 1969–1981,” immediately setting a tone of humor and self-reflection.
Hand-built and kiln-fired, the surface is richly layered with bold color, checkerboard patterning, flowing lines, and raised sculptural elements—including a lizard climbing along the form. The exaggerated structure and saturated glaze work create a strong visual rhythm from base to crown.
The piece reads as part confession, part satire, and part cultural time capsule. It references memory, excess, youth, and consequence without becoming overly literal. As with much of Hetherington’s work, humor carries the weight of the commentary.
Measures 7.5" tall, not including the head stopper. 9" tall with stopper. 5.5" deep and 5.25" across the wing on topper.
