This whimsical illuminated sculpture by John Richards of Yummy Mud Puddle blurs the boundary between folk sculpture, drawing, and functional light. Richards begins with a hand-formed wire armature that acts as a skeleton for the figure. Layers of tissue and paper are applied to build the body, creating a lightweight yet dimensional form that glows softly when lit from within. The surface becomes his storytelling canvas. The entire robe of the crowned figure is covered in spontaneous doodles, symbols, and humorous sketches rendered in ink and color washes. These playful markings—ranging from mysterious icons to comic fragments—create a narrative field that invites viewers to explore the piece from every angle.

When illuminated, the lamp transforms. Light passes through the layered paper skin, activating the drawings and giving the figure a lantern-like presence that feels both theatrical and intimate. The result is a sculptural light object that carries the spirit of outsider drawing, folk narrative, and handmade ingenuity.
