Wayne Hewell 12" Jug Head Face Jug DP6086
Wayne Hewell is a 5th generation potter who mixes his own glazes and works in a studio along a dirt path leading to a chicken house in Gillsville, GA. The Hewell family has been creating pottery for over 100 years. He uses wild clay from Georgia, fires in a wood-fired kiln, and uses Tobacco Spit or Alkaline glazes to create the greenish, runny surfaces on the jugs.
This large-scale double-spout face jug pushes the Southern face vessel tradition into bold, sculptural territory. Measuring approximately 12" tall and 13" wide and with a 6" base, the piece is defined by its horn-like opposing spouts, each marked with simple cross motifs that add a subtle symbolic edge.
The face is sharply modeled, with elongated features, incised brows, and a slightly off-kilter gaze that gives the jug a charged, almost confrontational personality. A cool celadon glaze wraps the form, with heavier vertical runs cascading from the rim and spouts, emphasizing the piece’s movement and kiln-driven character.
Its width and presence make it a standout display piece—an assertive example of Hewell’s evolving voice within Georgia’s pottery lineage.
Ships with tracking and insurance for $35. Pottery does not ship outside the continental USA.
