After a couple of local classes to learn some basics, Jackie Apessos taught herself everything else from there. Some work is thrown on the wheel and then hand sculpted, while other pieces are completely built by hand. Almost everything has a face. Because of significant challenges with her vision, she works mostly with smaller pieces, as she needs to hold them in her hand under intense light, and work the clay using shadows as her guide. Jackie derives so much joy when working with clay. Oh, and she loves to collect and make creepy faces.
This dramatic face jug captures a moment of raw expression—mouth wide open and teeth exposed as if mid-shout. The deep, glossy glaze shifts between dark teal and midnight tones, adding intensity to the bulging blue eyes and expressive facial modeling. Apessos emphasizes the sculptural drama of Southern face-jug traditions while maintaining a strong vessel form with flared neck and rounded base. This one is 7" tall, about 7" wide and has a 4" base.
