Wayne Hewell 9.5" Multi Face Candleabra DP6119

Wayne Hewell is a 5th generation potter who mixes his own glazes and works in a studio along a dirt path leading to a chicken house in Gillsville, GA. The Hewell family has been creating pottery for over 100 years. He uses wild clay from Georgia, fires in a wood-fired kiln, and uses Tobacco Spit or Alkaline glazes to create the greenish, runny surfaces on the jugs.

This multi-face candleabra offers a dense, narrative take on the traditional Southern face jug, featuring multiple sculpted heads emerging from the vessel’s shoulder. Each face is individually rendered, creating a rhythmic, almost totemic composition that invites viewing from every angle. Finished in a dark, glossy glaze, the surface pools and breaks across the textured forms, accentuating the depth of the carving and giving the piece a moody, atmospheric presence. The central handle and corked opening maintain the jug’s functional lineage, while the clustered faces transform it into a highly sculptural object.

Compact yet visually complex, this piece reflects Hewell’s skill in merging storytelling with form—an engaging addition for collectors drawn to more elaborate and layered interpretations of Southern folk pottery.

Measures 9.5" tall, 8" wide and has a 5" base. The mouth is full of rock teeth.
