You may have seen John's work in Tiffany & Co., Bonwit Teller, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales, The Museum of Contemporary Crafts NYC, The Museum of Modern Art, Jacksonville FL & various publications: House & Garden, American Home, Playboy, Asheville Citizen Times, Yancey Common Times Journal, Southern Living Magazine, The New York Times, The London Times, Folio & the prestigious Saint Augustine Record to name a few.
He has also subjected the unsuspecting public to his art in his various gallery stores: Impressions in Long Branch NJ, The Temple of Great Art No Spitting in Saint Augustine FL, and Yummy Mud Puddle in Provincetown MA, Nyack NY & now Burnsville NC. Enjoy the madness!
An army of friends and acquaintances work tirelessly to keep John supplied with cat food lids used to create his tabletop pieces. Every lid came from an actual cat food can, the contents of which were consumed by a cat. It had to be removed from the can, saved, and then prepared for sculpture application.
Medium Fish...about 25" long, 7" tall and 4.5" deep.

More than an assemblage artist, John Richards of Yummy Mud Puddle fame is also a maker of lights. Whimsical lights that light up the night with humor.John was born in 1936 (gosh he looks good for an old man) in Fond Du Lac Wisconsin (where the @%#* is that?). His mother was an artist & his father a writer. Due to circumstances beyond his control, he moved to Chicago IL, Glens Falls NY, Pelham Manor NY & Saint Just Puerto Rico by the time he was ten.
Sometimes a room needs a little light, and lots of personality. John's lamps will force a smile out of you 'cause they are just so darn much fun. Presented for your amusement, a Bunny lamp. Created with vinyl-ized (is that really a word?) paper over a wire frame. Really a sculpture that happens to light up. U.L. approved lighting fixture. Cord off and on switch. Every sculpture is handmade & therefore unique. Finally.
I took numerous photos so you can see some of John's witty writings. Check back for measurements since that piece of paper is sitting on the counter....at the gallery.

Every item is made one at a time by Craig Carey. There are no pre-bought patterns or items, save the hardware and mirror, and all ideas are their own. Craig starts with raw materials, willow from the edges of ponds for mirrors and signs, and lumber from anywhere that he can find it, and then carves or cuts everything by hand.
Then all items are sanded, primed and painted or stained. The stained items then get multiple coats of lacquer for a deep shine. If the work looks familiar, you may have seen it in Neiman-Marcus, Better Homes and Gardens, House Beautiful, Metropolitan Home, etc.
Yellow Mirror with Blue Bird
What a quirky way to look at yourself! The mirror frame measures 10" x 10", with the mirror being 6" x 6". About 17" tall, including the arch and leaves. One handmade and painted bird with tin wings is perched at the top. Please look through the detail photos to get a better idea of the mirror.
